Story Behind the Story Big Week for Big Break Alums

Big Break: MesquiteThis was a big week for Big Break alumni with both Tommy Gainey and Becky Lucidi making it through their respective Q-schools to earn their cards for the PGA and LPGA tours. Part of me would like to think that their experiences on the Big Break ' which is an especially grinding shoot ' helped them deal with the grind that is Q-school. Not only are both of them superb golfers; they are also unique personalities.
I met Tommy on my first day working as a producer for the GOLF CHANNEL. It was in Myrtle Beach, S.C. where he competed in the Monday After the Masters tournament put on by Hootie and the Blowfish each year. Tommys team ' along with Jeremy Roenick ' finished second and his swing and accent and attitude made him stand out. While I was editing, the guys who were selecting players for Big Break IV came over to look at tape of the guy who plays with the two gloves. They wound up picking him and he headed off to Scotland for the show. The culture shock of going from Bishopville, South Carolina to Carnoustie, Scotland was immense. And Tommys swing and accent made the Europeans wonder about his game. But, by the end of the show, Tommy was the one guy that everybody feared playing against.
I met Becky on the day we arrived in Hawaii to shoot Big Break V. Both of us are wise-cracking Italians who graduated from the University of Southern California, so we hit it off quickly. Becky kept things on the shoot light and funny. At one point I ventured out onto the driving range and lied down on the ground with a Super-8 camera to get unique angles of the women as they warmed up. I thought I was safe, but Becky instantly started hitting balls so the landed a couple of feet from my head. My favorite moment of hers was when she won the U.S. Amateur. When you watch the footage of her making the last putt you can see that she wants to cry. She keeps trying to get her caddy close enough so that she can bury her head into his shoulder, but she keeps missing him. Its funny and sweet and just lets you know that shes the type of golfer that you want to root for.
Congratulations, Tommy and Becky! All of us in the Big Break family are rooting for you!
