Tours Team Up for the Hyundai Team Matches

The Hyundai Team Matches, formerly known as the Diners Club Matches, get underway this weekend at the Pelican Hill Golf Club. 24 competitors, eight per Tour - playing in groups of two, are representing the LPGA Tour, PGA TOUR and Senior TOUR. LPGA Tour players will compete on the par 71 Pelican Hill Golf Club's North Course with a total yardage of 6,347 while the PGA Tour's eight players will compete on 6,897 yards and the Senior Tour competitors will play to 6,693 yards.
The two-day, unofficial event features team best ball with four two-player teams competing in alternate-shot, match play within respective Tours. Up for grabs is a $1,200.000 purse with $400,000 split between each of the Tour's four teams.
LPGA Tour's defending champions Juli Inkster and Dottie Pepper will vie for the title against this year's LPGA Tour field of Annika Sorenstam, Lorie Kane, Meg Mallon, Hall of Famer Beth Daniel, Kelli Kuehne and rookie Grace Park. Pepper and Inkster have captured the title three times prior (1996-97 & 1999) and are hopeful of retaining the honors in 2000.
Inkster and Pepper won their third consecutive title (the event was not played in 1998) after outplaying the team of Kelly Robbins and Karrie Webb 4 to 3. Although Webb and Robbins are not in this year's field to take another stab at it, the number two player in the world Annika Sorenstam will surely make past champions work for the title this year.
The PGA Tour team of Fred Couples and Mark Calcavecchia will try to hold on to their title against Phil Mickelson, Rocco Mediate, Tom Lehman, Duffy Waldorf, John Van De Velde and Steve Flesch while Senior PGA Tour team of Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson will fend off Gary McCord, John Jacobs, David Graham, Bruce Fleisher, Allen Doyle and Dana Quigley. Play starts Saturday and with these headliners this will be one event you won't want to miss.
