Buick Invitational - Round 1 News and Notes

*Last week it was Matt Gogel, this week it may be Mathew Goggin. Or is it the other way around? Goggin said he has repeatedly been mistaken for the reigning Pebble Beach champion, even though he is from Australia. Goggin said after Gogel blew a huge lead in the 2000 Pebble Beach Pro-Am, CBS reporter Peter Kostis came up and consoled Goggin.
He told me, you know, Bad luck. It was terrible. Youll get over it and become a better player.'
Goggin said he didnt have the heart to tell Kostis he was mistaken.
*Jay Williamson celebrated his 35th birthday Thursday by shooting 7-under 65 on the North Course.
*The North Course played over three shots easier than the South Course in round 1. The scoring average at the North was 70.103; the South was 73.782.
*For the second straight week, Tiger Woods is using a Nike driver, though this one has a quarter of a degree less loft.
*San Diegan Chris Riley is in good shape after opening in 6-under 66 at the North Course. Eight of the last 10 Buick Invitational winners ' and five in a row ' have Southern California ties.
*Frank Lickliter, who lost in a playoff to Phil Mickelson last year, was disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard. Lickliter shot 11-over 83 on the South Course.
*Steve Jones withdrew after shooting 6-over 78 on the South Course.
*Mike Fluff Cowan was on Peter Jacobsens bag in the first round. Cowan quit Jacobsens bag to caddie for Woods in 1996. Cowan caddies regularly for Jim Furyk, who is not playing this week.
