Colorful Round Gives Bland Lead

John Bland made four bogeys and a double in the second round of the Senior British Open, yet still managed to walk off the Royal County Downs course with the 36-hole lead.
Thats because Bland also recorded one eagle and six birdies on Friday.

Johns not-so-bland 2-under-par 69 has him a 5-under-par through two rounds, one shot clear of American David Oakley (68) and 65-year-old Kiwi Bob Charles (69).
Oakley won the Seniors Classic title in England last year. He is a Virginia native who lives in Orlando and plays extensively in Europe. Oakley qualified for the Senior PGA Tour in 1997, but performed poorly. He said he has no desire to try and qualify for it again.
Bland started the day tied for the lead with Englishman Denis Durnian; however, Durnian shot a second-round 76 and is now seven back of Bland at 2-over.
Jack Nicklaus, who was two shots off the 18-hole lead, is now five off the pace following a 1-over 72.
Five shots is not very much, said Nicklaus, who is competing in his first Senior British Open. If you play well you can make it up easily.
Bland has finished runner-up in three of the previous four Senior British Opens. For the second straight day, he started his round with an eagle-3 at the par-5 1st. He then birdied the par-4 3rd to move to 6-under for the tournament.
The South African gave all three shots back with a bogey at the par-4 6th and a double on the par-3 7th. He dropped another shot with a bogey at the par-4 9th, but then proceeded to birdie holes 10-12.
True to his topsy-turvy round, Bland finished bogey-birdie-birdie-bogey. Just as he has eagled the par-5 1st in each of the first two rounds, Bland has also bogeyed the par-5 18th on both occasions.
Arnold Palmer missed the cut, which fell at 8-over-par 150. The 71-year-old was visibly upset after opening in 84, but shot a more respectable 75 on Friday.
Still, Palmer hinted he might soon quit playing competitively.
Im going to cut it back, he said. I hate shooting a round like yesterday.
Give it up? Im getting close. Ill play occasionally. I will always play the Masters.
