Elkington Withdraws From Players

Two-time Players champion Steve Elkington has withdrawn from this year's event, citing an ailing back.
Elkington won at Sawgrass in 1991 and 1997. The 36-year-old Australian has suffered from a variety of illnesses; including sinus problems, a wrist injury and a torn hip and ball socket that required surgery.
Elkington will not be replaced in the field, which now stands at 144 players. If one more should withdraw then Honda Classic runner-up Geoff Ogilvy will be added as first alternate.
Ogilvy's chances of getting in increased when David Duval pulled out of a practice round with Tiger Woods and Mark O'Meara on the fourth hole Wednesday.
Duval skipped last week's Bay Hill Invitational due to a right wrist injury. Thus far, the 1999 PLAYERS champion and Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., native has not withdrawn from this year's tournmanet.
