One More Major Chance for Monty

SANDWICH, England -- Colin Montgomerie is noted as one of the best pre-tournament interviews in the game ' its when play begins that he can become intolerable ' and Wednesday was no exception.
The great Scot entertained media and himself in his Open Championship press conference. He also offered a personal assessment about his chances of finally winning this event when a reporter asked him to do so on a scale of 1 to 10.
How do I rate my chances? If I didnt say 10, I should be here, right? So theres your answer. I am here, so its 10. If I wasnt here, it would probably be less than 1, he said.
When the reporter asked if '10' was a realistic answer, Montgomerie replied, Yes. I am realistically here.
The 38-year-old is 0-for-13 in this major, and 0-for-48 in all. His best Open Championship result is a tie for eighth in 1994.
He was two off the 36-hole lead a year ago, but followed a 64 with an 84 in brutally difficult third-round conditions at Muirfield.
Im not frustrated at not winning an Open, no, Montgomerie said. If I finish my career and havent won a major and whatever the case may be, Ill look back on a very successful time, thank you very much.
Montgomerie, a seven-time European Tour Order of Merit champion from 1993-99, has 27 career European Tour victories, and at least one in each of the last 10 seasons. He has yet to win this year, however, and has dipped to 21st in the world ranking.
My goal at the start of the year was to remain in the top 10 in the world, and Ive fallen back 11 spots, and its my goal for the rest half of the season to get back into the top 10, he stated.
You cant stay at the top forever. If we did, Muhammad Ali would still be champion, wouldnt he?
Montgomerie also acknowledged Wednesday that, despite appearances, he is in fact concerned about his image.
Because Im a father and a husband, and I care about that, as well, he explained. Im a very public figure. And I do care about image very, very, very much.
If I didnt care about what I did, I wouldnt be here.
