Picture Perfect Pebble

It's borderline 45-degrees in Pebble Beach, Calif., but you'll get no complaints from the players.

'Hey, it's not raining,' quipped Mark Calcavecchia.
Calc might not mind a shower or two this week. Last week, in the wind and the rain and cold and even a bit of hail, Calcavecchia won the Phoenix Open. Actually, won is a bit of an understatement. Calcavecchia torched the TPC of Scottsdale in 256 strokes, breaking a 46-year-old PGA Tour record.
Explained Calc, 'I was just in a zone, in a daze, you know.'
No, Calc, most of us don't.

One man who does, however, is Calcavecchia's practice-round partner this week - Tiger Woods. Woods will be defending his title at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
You know the story - Seven down with seven to play, Tiger roars back to win his sixth consecutive PGA Tour event. He did so on a Monday. Hey, at least they played 72 holes. In 1999, the event was shortened to 54 holes. The same held true in '98, though the contest wasn't completed until August. But even that's better than what transpired in 1996, which is nothing. Nothing took place. They tried to play, but an angry Mother Nature failed to cooperate. The event, as a whole, was cancelled.
Such extremes won't happen in 2001. In fact, not a drop of rain is expected - or at least predicted.
'If we can have one great tournament with great weather, it can add a lot to this event,' said Phil Mickelson, who won the weather-delayed Pro-Am in '98.
Wednesday, players traversed the three courses on which they'll compete - Pebble Beach, Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill. Some wore turtlenecks. Some wore sweaters. Tiger wore both. Yet no one was clad in Gortex. No umbrellas were needed - save to shade one's eyes from the glaring sun.

Said David Duval: 'I've been coming here for about seven, eight years. It's just nice to have a good forecast. I'm really looking forward to it.
'You get tired of the weather. You sit through three days of delays and think, 'I'm not coming here next year.' Then you get up on Monday and you think, 'I bet it'll be nice next year. Can't wait till next year.'
At least for the moment, next year is now.
Check out who is playing this week!
