GolfChannel.com Senior Writer Rex Hoggard is in Augusta, Georgia for the 76th Masters Tournament. No one has ever won the Par 3 Contest and The Masters in the same year and the 2011 Par 3 Contest Winner Luke Donald is not playing this year (he finished T4 in the 2011 Masters). Donald said that it was not a good idea to putt on greens that were not exactly the same as the tournament greens the day before The Masters. His goal in 2011 was to try to break the curse but he is not concerned about the curse this year.
There is something about being at Augusta National that seems to lift Tiger Woods’ spirits. He seemed to be very happy and relaxed during his News Conference on Tuesday and he even said that he thinks he is more consistent now than he was in 2000.
Gary Player will be making his debut as an Honorary Starter this year alongside Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. During his News Conference he said that he has been in the gym a lot recently because he wants to outdrive both Nicklaus and Palmer. When you look at golfers today, the great majority of them are spending a lot of time in the gym while Gary Player was a bit of a pioneer in his day. Dustin Johnson’s injury brings up the question about whether or not golf will now see injuries that are more associated with basketball or football because of the popularity of fitness and the gym.
When it comes to the question of the fourth favorite this week, Luke Donald’s name is mentioned although he is still a bit under the radar. Donald loves Augusta National and he feels very comfortable being under the radar. He finished T4 last year and as World #1 it is logical to include Donald on the short list of favorites.
