Sands is in Hawaii this week for Golf Channel’s coverage of the Sony Open in Hawaii. Nick Watney was involved in a rules controversy last week when TV cameras saw his caddie apparently test the surface of the green. Both Watney and his caddie denied it and there was no penalty. Sands spoke with Watney’s playing partner that day Webb Simpson who said that there was no way that neither Watney nor his caddie would be lying as both of them are really good guys and would not cheat. Among colleagues, the majority –including himself- thought that Watney’s caddie did touch the green and told Chad Reynolds about this. However, he is taking Chad at his word while acknowledging that good people can make mistakes.

Many PGA TOUR rookies are making their debuts as members this week and Honolulu is very different from Maui in terms of size, the number of people on-site at the golf course, and the amount of different things to do in the evening after golf is done for the day. One great thing to do in Honolulu is go to the North Shore and watch average-sized people riding waves that are 40-50 feet high. But the coolest thing to do is to go to Pearl Harbor and take the entire tour. He has been going to Honolulu for 11 years and he takes that tour every year.

Coming off of the brief offseason, a couple of notable people who look different are Lucas Glover who is no longer wearing a thick beard and looks great with a clean-shaven look. Steve Marino has also lost a lot of weight and looks great as well. Marino is one of the most popular players on the PGA TOUR and a lot of people are rooting for him to break through and earn his first career PGA TOUR win. Marino lives in Jupiter, FL and spends a lot of time practicing on the golf course when he is not playing on the PGA TOUR so Sands thinks that Marino is due for a great start to the season.
