PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Ian Poulter is eager to play with the No. 1 player in the world at The Players Championship this afternoon.
It will mark the first time he is in the same grouping with Tiger Woods in a PGA Tour event.
Two years ago, Poulter famously told Golf World U.K.: “I really respect every professional golfer, but I know I haven't played to my full potential and when that happens, it will be just me and Tiger.'
It won't be just Poulter and Tiger today. Hunter Mahan's also in the grouping.
Woods began calling Poulter “No. 2” after that remark went global.
Poulter said his words were taken out of context, but he has strengthened his standing in the game since then. He was No. 22 in the world when he made the controversial remark. He’s No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking today and won the Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year. He was second in last year’s The Players Championship and contended at the Masters before tying for 10th.
