Burns Clings to Lead in Virginia

2006 Henrico County OpenGLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Jeff Burns struggled to a 2-over 74 in round three Saturday as his lead dropped to one stroke at the Henrico County Open. Burns finished 54 holes at 11-under-par 205.
Peter Tomasulo, who led after the first round, posted a 1-under 71 in the third round to remain in second place at 10-under-par 206. Erik Compton (68) and Matt Kuchar (69) share third place at minus-9.
Jason Caron tied for the low round of the day with a 5-under 67. That helped him climb into a tie for fifth place at 6-under-par 210. He was joined there by Paul Claxton, who stumbled to a 73 Saturday.
Scores on Saturday soared as winds gusted throughout the round. Just 21 of the 60 players broke par in round three.
Burns was up and down throughout his round. He opened with a birdie on the first to move to 14 under at The Dominion Club, then birdied the par-5 fourth.
The 31-year-old, whose best tour finish was a tie for 17th last year at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic, tripped to his first bogey at the fifth.
Burns recovered that lost stroke as he birdied No. 7. He faltered to bogeys on the eighth and 10th to drop to even-par for his round and 13 under overall. Burns birdied the par-5 12th to get one of those lost strokes back.
He stumbled to back-to-back bogeys from the 14th, then closed with a three-putt bogey to fall back to minus-11.
'I felt great today. I slept better than I ever did last night,' Burns admitted. 'I felt pretty good the entire day, but all in all I am disappointed with my scoring and how I started off.'
Tomasulo was steady as he posted his first birdie on No. 3. The 2005 Alberta Classic winner parred each of his next 12 holes.
He gave a shot back with a bogey on the 16th, but recovered that lost stroke with a birdie on the par-5 18th.
'I hit it well, but didn't make any putts today,' said Tomasulo. 'I have got to hit it better and try to make some putts. I felt pretty comfortable out there today.'
Andrew Pratt carded a 4-under 68 to jump into a tie for seventh at 5-under-par 211. He stands alongside Steve Wheatcroft (73) and Charlie Wi (70). Hunter Haas, Bryce Molder, Fran Quinn, Chris Smith and Omar Uresti are one stroke further back at minus-4.
