Elite LPGA Field in Palm Desert

PALM DESERT, California -- The LPGA tees it up this week with a select 20-player field at the Samsung World Championship.
The field includes the reigning major champions, the 2006 Vare Trophy Winner, the 2006 LPGA Money Winner, the leading player from the European Tour, a championship selection committee choice, as well as the top money holders on the LPGA Tour from the 2007 season.
Current World No. 1 and Women's British Open champ Lorena Ochoa headlines a field that also includes Kraft Nabisco Championship winner Morgan Pressel, McDonald's LPGA Champion Suzann Pettersen and U.S. Women's Open champ Cristie Kerr.
The field this week accounts for 19 of the 25 winners this season.
The six winners not in the field this week include Meaghan Francella, Silvia Cavalleri, Young Kim, Natalie Gulbis, Sherri Steinhauer and Stacy Lewis. Lewis' win at the NW Arkansas Championship was unofficial because the event was cut to 18 holes due to heavy rain throughout the week.
Former World No. 1 and five-time winner Annika Sorenstam turned down an invitation this week, but Michelle Wie will be playing on an invitation, despite making just two cuts on the LPGA Tour this year.
The GOLF CHANNEL has evening coverage the first two rounds before NBC takes over for the final two rounds.
Next week, the LPGA begins its three-week stay in Asia with the Hana Bank- KOLON Championship, where Jin Joo Hong won last year.
