Fall Series Heads into Texas

2006 Valero Texas OpenSAN ANTONIO, Texas - Then-rookie Eric Axley became a first-time winner on the PGA TOUR when he closed out a three-shot victory at the Texas Open last year.
The first-place check of $720,000 was nearly 3 1/2 times what he had earned in his previous 26 PGA TOUR starts. Axley shot a 15-under 265, and there were six other players who were double-digits under par.
One of the most storied events on TOUR, this event is a notorious shootout, so expect low scores again this year -- even if the field is lacking superstar power.
Last year, it was played the week of the Ryder Cup. This year, it is being held one week after the Presidents Cup. That, coupled with the ongoing hangover from the first-ever FedExCup playoffs, has left the Texas Open with world No. 33 Richard Green as its highest-ranked player.
The GOLF CHANNEL will have coverage of all four rounds this week.
Next week, the PGA TOUR is in Las Vegas for the Open, which was won by Troy Matteson.
