Incredible Birdie Run Gives Quigley Lead

2005 BrunoBIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Dana Quigley matched a Champions Tour record on Friday with eight consecutive birdies to lead during the suspended first round of the Bruno's Memorial Classic. Quigley shot a 7-under-par 65 to finish one shot ahead of Tom Wargo.
'I love this course,' said Quigley, who equaled the mark set by Chi Chi Rodriguez and later matched by Jim Colbert in 2000. 'It sets up well for guys who are hitting it well.'
Curtis Strange posted a 67 to join Mark Johnson in the clubhouse at 5 under par. Defending champion Bruce Fleisher completed his round on Friday and is one shot back at 4-under-par 68.
Severe thunderstorms rolled through the area in the afternoon and the dangerous situation around Greystone Golf & Country Club ultimately forced the suspension of play. The first round will resume Saturday at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Quigley had a quiet front nine with a birdie and a bogey before catching fire on the inward half. He picked up three straight birdies from the 10th and reached the green in two at the par-5 13th.
He missed his eagle try, but tapped in for birdie. Quigley then hit his tee shot inside 18 feet for a birdie at the par-3 14th and played his third shot within a foot of the hole for a kick-in birdie at the par-5 15th.
Quigley kept on rolling with a birdie at the par-4 16th after his second shot stopped 10 feet from the cup and tied the Champions Tour record for consecutive birdies in a round with a birdie at the par-3 17th. Quigley's remarkable back nine was tainted by a bogey at the closing hole, however, but the eight straight birdies were good enough to push him into the lead in the clubhouse.
'If I would have birdied 18, I would have gone right back to one,' said Quigley. 'I wanted to keep it going. I was trying to make birdie at the last hole.'
Raymond Floyd had six birdies and a bogey on his round before play was called. Floyd stands at 5 under par through 17 holes. Tom Jenkins and D.A. Weibring are both at minus-5 through 16 holes.
