LPGA Announces 2002 Tournament Schedule

The LPGA Tour has announced its 2002 schedule, featuring 34 total events. Thirty-one count as official money, two are unofficial events and the seventh the playing of the Solheim Cup.
One big change in 2002 events will be the purse size for the competitors. This year's average purse is $1.9 million, the highest in the 51-year history of the LPGA Tour.

'2002 is going to be a very good year for the LPGA Tour,' said Ty Votaw, commissioner of the LPGA. 'Our players are competing for more money each week than ever before, and this should increase even more because we expect several additional tournaments to announce purse increases for 2002. We are happy with our schedule as released.'
There will be one new addition to the 2002 schedule, the Kellogg-Keeble Classic, scheduled for the end of May at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Ill. This event is the first time the LPGA Tour has stopped in the Chicago area since 1994.
The four major tournaments on the 2002 docket are the Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club (March 28-31), the McDonald's LPGA Championship at DuPont Country Club in Delaware (June 6-9), the U.S. Women's Open at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. (July 4-7) and the Women's British Open in Scotland (Aug 8-11).
The 2002 season officially opens at the LPGA Takefuji Classic in Hawaii Feb. 28 - March 2.
