Wisler Goes Low for Lead

The Barton Creek ChallengeAUSTIN, Texas -- Chris Wisler fired an 8-under 62 on Friday to open a three-shot lead after the first round of the Barton Creek Challenge on the Crenshaw Cliffside Course at Barton Creek Resort.
Craig Kanada, Danny Paniccia and Chris Locker tied for second at 5-under-par 65.
Play was washed out on Thursday after a storm left the course unplayable. Wisler had an early start on Friday and took full advantage en route to the first-round lead.
'It's always important to get out to a good start, but when you are only playing 54 holes, you can't afford a bad round,' said Wisler. 'I am going to have to keep it up on the weekend to have any chance.'
The 24-year-old ran off nine birdies and a bogey for the outright lead.
'It was just one of those days where everything worked for me,' said Wisler, who captured the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Championship in 2002. 'The course was about as easy as it could be today. Even when I hit bad shots, I made some big putts.'
Andy Johnson, Zoltan Veress and Paul Danielson shared fifth place at 4-under-par 66. Craig Taylor, Chris Wollmann, Mark Johnson, Matt Hansen and Casey Bourque were one shot further back at 3-under-par 67.
Defending champion Rob Johnson finished in a tie for 13th at 2-under-par 68.
