Play golf in the footsteps of Byron Nelson at Four Seasons Resort Dallas

The Four Seasons Resort Club Dallas at Las Colinas – which has long been associated with legend Byron Nelson and the PGA Tour event named for him – is offering a pretty good spring package through the end of May.

The Spring Escape Package starts at $215 per night (families can get additional rooms, if needed, for $150 night) and includes a 25 percent discount on all activities, including golf on the TPC Four Seasons, which will host the HP Byron Nelson Championship May 20-23. In addition, kids eat and play for free.

Room rates at the Four Seasons Resort, Texas' only AAA Dive Diamond resort, are normally considerably higher, and the current economic climate could have something to do with the discount. The Four Seasons Resort, which has been owned by BentleyForbes since 2006, has had some financial difficulty of its own lately. It currently faces a possible foreclosure, however, resort officials have said that operations will not be affected.

Having stayed at the Four Seasons Resort in Las Colinas on several occasions, I can tell you that it's still the standard when it comes to service, accommodations and resort golf in Texas.

Recently, the resort, which is located just 10 minutes from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, underwent a $60 million enhancement and expansion, which included the redesign of the TPC Four Seasons golf course, one of two championship courses on the property.

D.A. Weibring was in charge of the redesign, and while the TPC course kept its original routing, the par-70, 7,166-yard layout is a radically different, and it's a far better golf course than it used to be. The most dramatic change can probably be seen on the par-4 finishing hole, which got a new tee box above the 17th green, looking down on four new lakes and a cascading waterfall.

The lobby and sports club, one of the best in Texas, were also expanded. There's a new family pool, and the spa and tennis facilities remain first-rate.
