One of the great phenomenons of North America is the north's changing of colors. Places like Michigan and New York showcase the magnificence of the changing of the seasons better than just about everywhere else. Here are some of Matt Ginella's top spots where you can bask in the beauty of fall golf: 

It's tough to beat Michigan for fall golf. While Matty G opts towards the west side of the state and Tullymore & Pilgrim's Run, for me, the fall golf compass should aim straight towards Gaylord. The big hills of north-central Michigan inspired Treetops Resort, and elevated tees make for miles-long views of nothing but treetops. Courses like Boyne Highlands' Hills Course, Dunmaglas also showcase long, forested views. Black Lake, a little like Tullymore, isn't so hilly, but it's another remote, forested experience. If you're that far north on I-75, you may as well head over the Mackinac Bridge and drive a few more hours to scenic gems Timberstone & Greywalls in the Upper Peninsula. 

Upstate New York is also a major draw. Other courses to consider around Leatherstocking (one of Ginella's picks), is Sagamore Resort, an old Ross course in the foothills of the Adirondack mountains, as well as Colgate University's home course in Hamilton, Seven Oaks, and Saratoga National in horse racing country.

Also, I was just up north, way north, in Minnesota's Iron Range, where two of the state's top courses await at Giants Ridge. Here, a mythical giant plodded through the forest for years, creating the hundreds of lakes that are now stocked with walleye. It's off the beaten path to this day, and treelined corridors on gently rolling terrain make for a round of true solitude. 

Giants Ridge, like most northern destinations, actually offer discounted rates in the fall. But on a perfect, sunny and crisp day, isn't a round worth double?
