PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Cheyenne Woods got some counsel from her famous uncle before posting a 3-over-par 75 in her professional debut Thursday at the Wegmans LPGA Championship.
She said she has received encouraging texts from Tiger Woods as she prepared for this day.
What has he said?
“Just trust my abilities, have fun and be patient,” Cheyenne said.
Woods was tied for 64th when she signed her scorecard near the end of the morning rounds. The cut Friday will be to the low 70 scores and ties. If you’re wondering, Tiger shot a 4-under-par 67 in his pro debut at the Greater Milwaukee Open in 1996. He ended up tying for 60th.
Woods told Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman he was excited about Cheyenne’s debut.
“It was really exciting going into this day,” Cheyenne said. “I’ve been waiting and waiting for this moment. I couldn’t wait to get out here. I was a little nervous starting off but it felt great to be out there.”
Cheyenne got a huge ovation from the crowd around the 18th when she stuck a wedge to a foot after having to hack out of trouble. She saved par there.
What is she looking to accomplish in her pro debut?
“Just boost my confidence,” she said. “It’s a little intimidating being out here with the Yani Tsengs and Paula Creamers for the very first time, but I’m just excited and taking everything in and using it as experience for my future career.”
