Equipment switch off to good start for Overton

HONOLULU – In team sports, recently signed free agents often feel a little extra motivation to prove their worth to a new club. Jeff Overton maintains that wasn’t part of his inspiration entering this season.

But it certainly didn’t hurt with a season-opening 5-under 65 to kick off the Sony Open.

“At the end of the day, it’s just a better fit,” he said of moving to a TaylorMade driver and Adams clubs in the offseason. “I felt horrible even switching. But at the same time, I’m trying to go with the small little things. It’s just details, small details, I’m trying to get better at.”

Overton carded six birdies against just a single bogey, as his main goal for the season remains the same as its been for a while.

“Obviously, the goal is to get a win,” he said. “I haven’t won and I’d like to get the monkey off my back. “That’s my biggest goal and more so I think it just comes from hitting as good a shot as you can every time and playing every single hole like it’s to win the Masters.”
