On Sunday, former world No. 1 amateur Peter Uihlein posted his best-ever finish on the European Tour, a solo fourth at the inaugural Tshwane Open.
A former Oklahoma State standout and 2010 U.S. Amateur champion, Uihlein struggled after turning pro in December 2011, but seems to have found solid footing overseas. He narrowly missed earning his European Tour card for this season, competing in 15 events and finishing 26th in earnings last year on the European Challenge Tour – Europe’s equivalent of the Web.com circuit.
In South Africa, Uihlein shot four consecutive rounds in the 60s to post 17-under 271, four shots behind winner Dawie Van Der Walt.
Prior to this week, the 23-year-old Uihlein’s best finish on the European Tour was a T-19 at last month’s Joburg Open. He has received a sponsor exemption into next week’s Puerto Rico Open, the opposite-field event on the PGA Tour.
