No rust for Russell: Henley one off Humana pace

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Five rounds into his PGA Tour career, Russell Henley still hasn’t carded a score worse than 67.

The Sony Open champion kept on rolling Thursday in the California desert, carding an 8-under 64 on the Nicklaus Course at PGA West to sit just one shot off the lead at the Humana Challenge.

So much for a Hawaiian hangover.

“I haven’t changed much,” Henley said after his round. “I’m still just trying to do the same things. Trying to keep it simple.”

Good idea.

After closing with five consecutive birdies to win Sunday at Waialae, the University of Georgia product birdied four of his first five holes Thursday to jump onto the first page of the leaderboard. Making the turn in 32, he made eagle on the par-5 fourth, then tacked on birdies at Nos. 5 and 8 to shoot 64.

“It was a really good day,” he said, smiling.
