BETHESDA, Md. – Despite damage from the Friday night ‘derecho’ that may have exceeded what Congressional CC faced, this week’s Greenbrier Classic will continue as scheduled.
“The Greenbrier Classic 2012 will start on schedule this Monday and go off without a hitch,” said Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier Resort. “It’s really special to see how everyone has come together over the past 48 hours.’
The Friday night storm that blew in from Ohio passed through the West Virginia resort before making its way to the D.C. region, where it affected third-round play at the AT&T National.
Justice said 70-80 trees were damaged at the Old White TPC, the host course for the event. Among those, fifty 200-year-old trees fell, including one large sycamore across the 16th green. Skyboxes, spectator areas and camera towers were damaged, as well.
The hotel on resort property and much of surrounding White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., were without electricity on Sunday.
Temperatures are forecast to be in the upper 80s all week, with scattered thunderstorms possible on Thursday and Friday of tournament week.
