You Oughta Know: Shell Houston Open

Thumbnail

As 15 players begin the final round within two shots of the lead at the Shell Houston Open, the tournament remains totally up for grabs. Here’s what You Oughta Know entering the final round at Redstone Golf Club, where Stewart Cink and Bill Haas sit atop the leaderboard:

• After capturing the British Open in 2009, Stewart Cink has since fallen on hard times. The Georgia Tech product has not won since besting Tom Watson in a playoff at Carnoustie nearly four years ago, but enters the final round with a share of the 54-hole lead. He’s in search of just his second top-10 finish on the PGA Tour since May 2011, having tied for 10th earlier this season at the Humana Challenge.

• Holding a share of the 54-hole lead along with Cink, Bill Haas, will look to return the event’s trophy to his family for the second time. Haas’ father, Jay, captured the Houston Open title in 1987, winning the event in a playoff over Buddy Gardner with a par on the first extra hole. The younger Haas, who captured the FedEx Cup in 2011, is in position for his fifth top-10 finish in just nine starts this season on the PGA Tour.

• Only one shot off the pace after 54 holes, Steve Wheatcroft could potentially become the first Monday qualifier to win a PGA Tour event since Arjun Atwal captured the 2010 Wyndham Championship. With the winner this week receiving $1,116,000, the Hoosier grad is also in position for his largest-ever payday on Tour. Wheatcroft enters this week with only one prior top-10 finish on the PGA Tour, a tie for third at the 2010 Puerto Rico Open, which netted him $168,000.

• In search of his first top-10 finish in nearly a year, D.A. Points enters the final round just one shot off the lead despite struggling over the past several months. A winner at the 2011 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Points’ last high finish came after advancing to a playoff at last year’s Wells Fargo Championship. Since then, the Illinois alum has missed the cut in 17 of 25 starts, with his best result coming at the HP Byron Nelson Championship last May when he tied for 19th.

• With several players in contention, don’t be surprised if overtime is required to decide a winner Sunday at Redstone. Twenty-one times a playoff has been needed in Houston, more than any other PGA Tour event outside the U.S. Open. The last playoff at Redstone came in 2010, when Anthony Kim defeated Vaughn Taylor on the first extra hole to claim his third career PGA Tour title.
