LOS ANGELES – Charlie Danielson shot a bogey-free 68 on Monday in the Collegiate Showcase at Riviera Country Club to earn his spot in the Northern Trust Open. On Thursday, the Illinois senior went one better in his first PGA Tour start.

Danielson’s 4-under 67 left him tied for fifth place and three strokes off the lead on a leaderboard that featured some of the game’s top players.

“I was a little intimidated at first, but everyone has been so kind to me,” Danielson said. “They have always thought enough to come up and say congratulations and a couple guys saying that, you know, you earned it, so act like it. That's been great.”

Danielson – who began his day on the 10th hole that at 315 yards is arguably the Tour’s most thought-provoking par 4 – played like a veteran early with back-to-back birdies.

After bogeys at Nos. 12 and 13, Danielson added birdies at the 16th, first and third to move to 3 under, and closed his day with two more birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 to share a spot on the leaderboard with Rory McIlroy and Charles Howell III.

“It's pretty humbling. I'm honored. These are the best players in the world, and to compete with them on such a great golf course, and championship-style golf course, is pretty thrilling,” he said.
