Nehr Sets Record In Contention at Myrtle Beach

Jamie Neher of Tequesta, Fla., who was on the bubble to make the cut Saturday morning, shattered the course record with a 63 Saturday to climb to within four shots of the lead at the Myrtle Beach Open.
Eamonn Brady (Ireland) and Aaron Barber (Orlando, Fla.) share the lead at 7-under-par entering final-round play Sunday. Derek Gillespie of Oshawa, ON is the top Canadian with a three-day total of 212, six strokes back of the leaders.Canadian Tour-Large
Playing a bogey-free round while racking up eight birdies, Neher clipped two strokes off the course record set Friday by D.A. Points and equalled by Aaron Barber later in the day. What made the feat ever more remarkable was Neher needed a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole Friday just to qualify to tee it up for Round 3.
'When I was 2-under after ten holes, I thought I was doing well then,' said the 6'1, 185-pound Neher, a conditional member on the Buy.Com Tour.
'I hit the ball very well today, and my putting was really on.'
After recording two double and one triple-bogeys over the opening two days, Neher caught fire on the back nine Saturday, birdying out on his final four holes and shooting 6-under on the final six.
The Golf Channel, which will televise the opening four events of the Canadian Tour season from Barefoot, equipped Neher wih a microphone for the first two rounds but opted not to place one on him Saturday. Still, Neher said that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
'I tend to be one of those guys who says certain things you aren't supposed to say,' he laughed. 'No,it (the microphone) didn't bother me at all. It was a new experience for everyone.'
Moments after firing an even-par 71, Barber, who led entering third-round play, was tipping his cap to Neher.
'I picked a bad day not to hit the ball solid. But (Neher's) was an amazing round. For me in competitive golf, that is the best I have ever seen. I'm going to need a solid, sub-par round tomorrow.'
