Jim Armstrong will begin transitioning into retirement this year from his post as executive director of Augusta National Golf Club, the club announced in a released statement on Tuesday.
Armstrong, 65, has been at Augusta National since 1978 and ascended to the position of executive director last year. According to the club, he will officially retire in September.
‘Jim Armstrong has given Augusta National Golf Club more than three decades of exceptional vision, impressive leadership and outstanding service as our Executive Director,’ chairman Billy Payne said as part of the statement. ‘As a consequence of his longtime commitment, he is leaving a permanent and positive impression upon the legacy of Augusta National, its membership and The Masters.’
The club also announced that Armstrong will be succeeded by Will Jones, 46, who currently serves as Augusta National’s senior director of business affairs.
‘My career at Augusta National Golf Club has been one of remarkable good fortune, and my affection for this wonderful place is immeasurable,’ said Armstrong, who has served under five of the club’s six chairmen during his career. ‘It is nearly impossible to put into words the privilege I have experienced in serving the Club in this role.’
