PALM HARBOR, Fla. – There are several ways players like Jim Furyk can cope with a disappointing season like the one he had last year.
If it’s mental – as Furyk says his 2012 was – players can see a sports psychologist, they can hit the bar or they can find some other methodology to break through.
For Furyk, he needed to retreat.
“This last year, I really tried to get away for awhile,” Furyk said. “If that makes sense. I was really happy with a lot of things I did well in 2012, but it was going to be a frustrating, disappointing year to look back on just with the finishes and not being able to finish things off.”

Through four events this season, Furyk’s best showing was a T-13 at the Northern Trust Open, although he’s hoping to improve on that this week.
‘You know, my game right now, I’m sitting right on the fence right now. I see a lot of good things happening, but I need to turn a few of the bad things around.’
And the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook may be the perfect place to try. He won the Tampa Bay Championship here in 2010 and lost in a four-way playoff to Luke Donald last year.
‘Ever since I was a kid I’ve always enjoyed coming here. ... And it helps coming back here with good memories.’
