CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Stewart Cink’s opening 65 at Quail Hollow may have been his lowest round this year, but it wasn’t a fluke. He followed it up with a second-round 69 Friday morning and sits two back of leader Webb Simpson heading into the weekend.
Cink’s 69 Friday could have been lower were it not for bogeys on his final two holes. Still, Cink was encouraged by his performance on Day 2.
“I am a little disappointed in the finish, but they’re tough holes,” Cink said. “Even though I missed a very short putt on the last hole, about a 4-foot putt, you’re still not devastated with making bogey on the last hole.”
In 10 starts this season, Cink’s best finish is a T-13 at the Farmers Insurance Open in January. His track record at Quail Hollow sings a different tune. Cink has three top-10s at the course, including a T-9 last year.
Cink appears in control of his game and as he readies for the weekend, knows the recipe for success.
“I remember from years past being in this position here that you don’t have to go out there and shoot 65 both days on the weekend to move up,” Cink said. “You can just play solid rounds and let the other guys make mistakes.”
