MARANA, Ariz. – According to a report on Golf.com, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem intends to announce the circuit’s opposition to the proposed anchoring ban during Sunday’s broadcast of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on NBC.
Finchem, who plans to meet with the media early Sunday at Dove Mountain, held conference calls on Monday with the Player Advisory Council and Policy Board to formulate the response to the ban proposed by the U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient Golf Club.
Numerous sources on the PAC told GolfChannel.com the majority of players on Monday’s conference call opposed the ban and some Tour players who use long putters, including Carl Pettersson, have suggested they would seek legal relief if it is approved.
The 90-day comment period for the proposal, which would go into effect in 2016, ends next Thursday and Tour sources confirmed this week the circuit will also draft a written response to the ban.
PGA of America president Ted Bishop said last month that his organization also opposes the proposed ban.
