Rory McIlroy has been immortalized in the form of a mural in the Northern Ireland capital of Belfast.
A two-story painting of McIlroy posing in a follow-through, located in the Holyland part of the city, was completed on June 26, two days before the start of the Irish Open at Royal Portrush.
“It was the intention of the mural of Rory to send out a positive message that if you work hard enough at what you do, you can achieve your goals,” said Declan Boyle, who commissioned artist Danny Devenny to paint the work, according to Bernie McGuire.
The mural is an indication of changing times in the Ulster capital. Many of the murals in the city were painted during an era of civil war and division between those loyal to the British crown and separatists seeking independence or reunification with the Republic of Ireland. Many of those stark, sometimes disturbing murals are now being painted over with more positive messages and figures.
McIlroy is aware of the mural and has been invited to see it in person.
‘We have been in contact with some people who know the McIlroy family to suggest he come down and inspect the mural,’ Boyle said. ‘So, we’d love to see him here.’
