Weekly Fix: Engage your body to maintain posture

Hi, I’m Tim Cooke, and welcome back to Weekly Fix, where each week here on we’ll be analyzing your swings in hopes of helping you play better golf.

This week, we’ll be taking a look at Kevin’s golf swing.

Kevin gets into some trouble in his swing because his upper body and head move away from the golf ball on the downswing, a fault that I see with many players.

In Kevin's case, as we'll explain in our video analysis, some of the issues that he's having can be fixed, however, with a fairly simple setup change, which will allow him to engage his body better.

In summary, the tips I would suggest that everyone take away from this week’s analysis would include the following:

• At address, you want to feel as though your arms hang naturally from your shoulders, and if the butt end of the club is pointed at your belt line, you'll be in a good setup position.

• Make sure that you don't have your knees too close together at address, as it will limit your ability to utilize your glutes and make it tough for you to have the kind of stability you want in your swing.

• If your upper body is moving away from the golf ball in the downswing, your swing path is likely working too much to the left for a right-handed player, leading to toe shots. Additionally, your hands will get too far away from the body to create the speed and power that you're looking for, as ideally you'd like the hands to be close to the right quad as you approach impact.
