SUVA, Fiji – Matt Kuchar shot a 2-over 74 in blustery conditions Thursday to hold joint second-place after the first round of the Fiji International.
Kuchar, who arrived from South Korea where he had played in the winning United States team at the Presidents Cup, said the gusty conditions at the Natadola Bay resort meant "it was purely about survival out there."
In one instance, Kuchar watched as his ball, at rest a foot from the hole on the par-4 second, was blown by the wind into the hole for a bogey. (Check it out below)
The leaderboard at the jointly-sanctioned PGA Tour of Australasia and the OneAsia Tour event was dominated by Australian players.
Josh Geary led after shooting an even-par 72, two strokes ahead of compatriots Daniel Nisbet, Nick Cullen, Alistair Presnall and R.J. Caracella, plus Kuchar, who had three birdies against five bogeys.
Fijian-born Vijay Singh was in a tie for 33rd at 6 over.
