The Buccaneer Invitational hosted by Barry University in Miami Beach now has one less participant after thieves made off with "everything" - including clubs - from the Eckerd College team bus while they dined at a South Beach restaurant.
The team, in town from St. Petersburg, lost countless items including computers, phones, wallets and even some custom sets of golf clubs.
"Got in the van and realized that we were missing not some things, but everything," Eckerd College golf coach Bill Buttner told South Florida's WSVN. "Everything was gone."
The team had originally held out hope of finding their stolen clubs in time to compete but issued a statement on their website Monday afternoon saying that they had "withdrew due to circumstances beyond their control."
"We were playing well and really looking forward to teeing up tomorrow," said Eckerd sophomore Johan Nordahl, "making the last season push to try and get into regionals. It seems like they took that away from us. I feel especially sorry for our seniors. They basically destroyed [the seniors] chance at getting to regionals."
