Palmer Cup player to receive spot in 2016 API

A player on the Palmer Cup – the Ryder Cup-style competition between college players from the United States and Europe – will receive an exemption into next year’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, it was announced this week.

The Palmer Cup invitation will replace the exemption previously awarded to the winner of the Southern Amateur. This year’s spot went to MJ Maguire, a senior at North Florida.

The selection of the Palmer Cup representative will be determined by a vote of the 20 participants. They will select a member of the team (excluding themselves) who they think embodies the “Arnold Palmer Legacy.” The top vote-getter earns the spot in 2016, provided he remains in college.

In addition, the event’s name will change to the Arnold Palmer Cup, beginning in 2016.

This year’s event is June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois. The U.S. leads the overall series, 9-8-1.
