The PGA Tour announced Monday that the Barbasol Championship will be added to the schedule as a new event beginning in 2015.
The tournament will be held opposite the Open Championship, with the inaugural event set for July 16-19 at Grand National in Opelika, Ala., along the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
The Tour has traditionally held a tournament opposite the season's third major, with the Sanderson Farms Championship holding that spot on the schedule from 2011-2013. There was no event opposite the Open this summer, though, as the Sanderson Farms event moved dates and will be played in November opposite the WGC-HSBC Champions in China.
"We are excited to announce the creation of the Barbasol Championship and to present an outstanding new playing opportunity for our members beginning next season,” commissioner Tim Finchem said as part of the announcement.
News of a new event was first reported last week, though a sponsor was not yet announced. The sponsorship agreement is for four years, running through the 2017-18 season.
Next summer will mark the Tour's first return to the state of Alabama since the 1990 PGA Championship, when Wayne Grady captured the Wanamaker Trophy at Shoal Creek.
