British Open ratings down 28 percent from 2013

RSS

A Rory runaway wasn’t great news for ratings.

The final round of the Open Championship drew a 2.6 overnight rating on ESPN – down 28 percent from 2013 (3.6), when Phil Mickelson rallied on the final day to capture the claret jug.

Even though Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler both got into the mix late Sunday at Royal Liverpool, it apparently wasn’t enough to make up for the fact that McIlroy carried a six-shot lead into the final day. Tiger Woods was also a non-factor, tying for 69th and finishing his round at the same time McIlroy arrived to the course for his Sunday prep.

The 2.6 rating matched the worst for ESPN since it took over the rights to the Open five years ago. In 2010, Louis Oosthuizen had a four-shot lead after 54 holes and eventually won by seven.
