SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Bubba Watson was asked a simple question, and he gave a surprising answer Wednesday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Q: Why do you like this golf course?
An appropriate question since the two-time Masters champion has finished second here the last two years.
His answer: "I don't like it. I'm not going to PC it. I don't like it at all. I just mentioned why I'm here. I've got three beautiful sponsors that love it here."
Ping, Stance Socks and Oakley are all sponsors of Watson.
Watson said he was unhappy with the changes made to toughen up the course last year by Tom Weiskopf. Several fairway bunkers were moved to challenge even the longest hitters, like Watson, and as Phil Mickelson noted, a hole like the par-4 14th went from "a driver and a wedge birdie hole to driver, 4-, 5-iron and a very difficult par."
"It certainly has become harder overall," Mickelson added. "A lot longer, too."
Watson made it clear he wasn't a fan.
"I didn't see any reason to change it," he said. "You know, again, they didn't ask me. It's just my own opinion. I didn't see any reason to change it ... Scores didn't change. It just makes it goofier and tougher, which is not fun for us. We came here for a reason. We came here because we want to play golf and shoot good scores."
