Stewart Cink has announced that he is stepping away from competitive golf to be with his wife, Lisa, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
Cink was expected to play this week's Wells Fargo Championship, where he has four straight top-25 finishes, but withdrew Tuesday. He then posted a note to his more than 1.1 million Twitter followers explaining his decision:
Cink, 42, has six career PGA Tour titles including the 2009 Open Championship. He has not won since that major breakthrough, when he defeated Tom Watson in a playoff at Turnberry.
Cink has two top-25 finishes in 14 starts this season, highlighted by a T-17 finish at the CIMB Classic in October. He last teed it up at the RBC Heritage last month, where he missed the cut.
