Clothes minded: Kuchar motivated to 'wear the jacket'

RIO DE JANEIRO – Birdie by birdie, Matt Kuchar’s goal on Sunday at the Olympics was to “wear the jacket.”

Kuchar attended a doubles tennis match earlier in the week where fellow Americans Steve Johnson and Jack Sock won a bronze medal. Kuchar was sitting in a players box when the winning duo jumped up there and started hugging anyone who was within striking distance.

They were happy because they got to “wear the jacket.”

Each member of Team USA was presented an outfit that was to be worn on the podium if he or she were to finish in the top three. It’s a spiffy navy jacket with red sleeves and florescent yellow shoes.

“You see all the other people in sports putting on their podium jacket and you think, ‘you know what, I’d really like to put on that jacket and I don’t want to have that just as a keepsake to take home,’” Kuchar said Sunday after shooting an 8-under 63 to finish third and collect the bronze medal. “I’ve earned the right to wear this jacket, and now this medal. It’s an amazing sense of pride.”
