Compton, who opened with a 62 on Thursday at the Wyndham Championship for a share of the first-round lead with William McGirt, said he was pulled to take a drug test on Wednesday after his pro-am.
“I drank two vodka tonics to get my kidneys working,” said Compton, who scorched his closing nine (he started on No. 10) with seven birdies and no bogeys. “I don’t drink alcohol. Sometimes it helps me to get my kidneys going.”
The libations also may have helped spark his game at an opportune moment. Compton has struggled this year with just one top-10 finish and is currently 114th on the FedEx Cup points list.
He was likely safe to make the first playoff event, next week’s Barclays, but a good week at the Wyndham Championship could improve his chances of a longer playoff run.
