Day shoots 67 despite water woes

Jason Day got off to a good start at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, even though the Aussie spent a little too much time in the Louisiana bayou during his opening round.

Day found the water with consecutive tee shots on Nos. 3 and 4, dropping three shots in the process, but he rebounded with a flurry of birdies to card a 67. At 5 under, he sits three shots off the early pace set by Boo Weekley.

Day opened with a birdie on No. 10 and added three more birdies in a four-hole stretch on Nos. 15-18 to make the turn in 32. He was 5 under on the day when he arrived at the par-3 third hole, but his tee shot found the water short and right of the green. That led to a double bogey, and he dropped another shot on No. 4 when his drive missed right as well.

Day is making his first start in New Orleans since 2009, and he rebounded from those watery miscues to birdie three of his final five holes.

A winner earlier this year at Torrey Pines, Day has not finished worse than T-31 in seven starts this season, including five top-25 finishes. He tied for 28th at the Masters earlier this month. Day hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation during his opening round, and his total of eight birdies should come as no surprise - he has averaged 4.50 birdies per round this season, which ranks him third on Tour behind only Jimmy Walker and Jordan Spieth.
