ATLANTA – Jason Day withdrew from the Tour Championship after just seven holes on Friday with a back injury.

According to Day’s management team, he has a strained ligament in his lower right back and muscle spasms. It’s the same injury that he withdrew with during the final round of the BMW Championship two weeks ago.

“He withdrew as a precautionary measure. Jason should be fine with some rest after a long break in the offseason,” the statement read.

Day, the world No. 1 and fourth-ranked player on the FedEx Cup points list, pulled his drive at the par-4 eighth hole into the water and hit driver again from the rough after taking a penalty drop when he withdrew.

Day was even par for the day at the time and declined to speak with the media, but on Thursday he said his back was causing him discomfort.

“Every now and then, it hurt on a drive,” Day said on Thursday. “Some of the drives out there today hurt, just at the top of the transition. Once you go forward with the hips and crunches down, and it just hurts a bit.”
