De Jonge is wrong that Prez Cup ship has sailed

NORTON, Mass. – Don’t tell Brendon de Jonge, but that ship hasn’t sailed for the Presidents Cup yet.

After taking the first-round lead at the Deutsche Bank Championship Friday, de Jonge insisted he has written off any chance he has of making the International team. “That ship has sailed,” he said. He said pretty much the same thing Saturday after posting a 3-under-par 68 that left him tied for second, just three shots off the lead with the morning wave finishing.

“I've put myself so far behind the 8-ball with regard to that,” de Jonge said. “As I said yesterday, I feel even if I won this week it wouldn't even come close to warranting that. So that's far from my mind.”

Actually, according to the Official World Golf Ranking projections, de Jonge can still make the team in this final week of qualifying. If he wins, he’ll crack the top 10 of the International world rankings list that automatically make the team. He must win, however, as a second place finish won’t move him into the top 10.
