The wait to see who will lead the Europeans next year at Hazeltine is drawing to a close.

The European Tour will convene in England on Feb. 18 to decide the 2016 European Ryder Cup captain. The decision will be made by a five-man panel: former captains Paul McGinley, Jose Maria Olazabal and Colin Montgomerie, along with outgoing European Tour chief executive George O'Grady and Ryder Cup veteran David Howell.

News of the meeting was first reported by Reuters before being confirmed by a tweet from the Ryder Cup Europe account:

The choice for captain appears to be down to Darren Clarke and Miguel Angel Jimenez, with Clarke perceived as the heavy favorite. The Ulsterman played on five Ryder Cup teams from 1997-2006, compiling a 10-7-3 individual record, and he served as a vice captain during Europe's comeback win at Medinah in 2012.

Jimenez was also a vice captain in 2012, and again in 2014. The Spaniard has played on four Ryder Cup teams since 1999. The 51-year-old has previously expressed reticence over taking the job since he remains a competitive player, as evidenced by the fact that he won last month on the Champions Tour and will carry a lead into the weekend at the European Tour's True Thailand Classic this week.

The Ryder Cup will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 2, 2016, at Hazeltine National in Chaska, Minn.
