The European Solheim Cup team secured four more automatic qualifier spots with Sunday’s completion of the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open.
Four players made the team off the Ladies European Tour points list finalized two weeks ago. The four highest ranked Europeans in the Rolex rankings who did not make the team on points qualified Sunday night. Icher needed to finish solo fourth or better in Canada to bump Ciganda off the world rankings list but Icher ended up tying for ninth.
European captain Carin Koch will fill out the rest of her team with the announcement of her four captain’s picks on Tuesday morning. Koch has some tough choices to make with some big-name Europeans outside the qualifying standard. Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall, the only player to go 5-0 in a Solheim Cup, didn’t qualify for the team. Neither did Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, Germany’s Caroline Masson, Icher, Spain’s Beatriz Recari and England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff, all of whom played on the European team that beat the Americans in a record rout in Colorado. England’s Laura Davies, Sweden’s Maria McBride and the Netherland’s Christel Boeljon also did not qualify.
Here are the eight Europeans who automatically qualified:
