Faldo changes plan, will play Open through 2017

Nick Faldo has had a change of heart. This year will be the last Open he plays at St. Andrews, but it won't be his last Open.

The six-time major champion announced in April his intent to play his final Open Championship this July but unveiled a new retirement plan on Monday:

Faldo's decision will now allow Tom Watson, who is retiring from The Open, to stand alone in the spotlight whenever he crosses Swilcan Bridge for the last time - be it Friday or Sunday.

This year will mark the 25th anniversary of Faldo's second Open title, won at St. Andrews, and his 58th birthday on the Saturday of tournament week.

The Englishman earned the title of Champion Golfer of the Year in 1987, 1990 and 1992 and recorded 10 other Open top-10s between 1982 and 2003.

As alluded to in the tweet, The Open will head to Royal Troon in 2016 and Royal Birkdale in 2017.
