ATLANTA – After 10 seasons it’s clear the FedEx Cup is still a work in progress, even though most players appear to be pleased with how the points are now distributed.
One potential alteration that has been circulating in recent months is a reduction in the number of playoff events, which would allow for an earlier finish to the season.
“If something's really working well, we kick the tires pretty hard for a while before we mess around with it, and it's working pretty well,” Finchem said. “But on the other hand, we're also always asking, how can we do this better?”
Deutsche Bank stepped down as title sponsor of the second playoff stop at TPC Boston after this year’s event, and EMC was announced as the replacement sponsor, but the length of that deal was not given, suggesting a short-term solution.
If the Tour removed a playoff event like the Boston-area stop from the rotation, the season could end in early September, dramatically reducing the circuit’s head-to-head competition with the NFL and college football.
“I wouldn't rule out changes, but at this point in time, I wouldn't assume changes either,” Finchem said.
