PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem spoke on Tuesday at The Players Championship and his most interesting answers may have had nothing to do with grass, or the lack of it on a handful of TPC Sawgrass’ greens.
Since the WGC-Match Play Championship was played in February the Tour has been scrambling to find a replacement sponsor and venue.
Accenture ended its sponsorship of the event this year and conventional wisdom held that the Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain had hosted its last World Golf Championship, but on Tuesday Finchem said nothing has been decided or is off the table.
“We are not yet ready to announce anything and are trying to have a decision by the end of May,” he said. “It’s been taking a little longer than we thought.”
In February, Finchem said he hoped to have a decision by April on the new venue and title sponsor, and he added that a possible return to Dove Mountain was not off the table.
The Match Play was been played at Dove Mountain since 2007.
