Former champ Cink withdraws from The Open

Former champion Stewart Cink has withdrawn from the 145th Open, the R&A announced Wednesday.

Cink earned his lone major title in 2009, when he defeated Tom Watson in a playoff at Turnberry. This will mark the first time the 43-year-old has missed The Open since 1999.

Cink announced in April that he was taking a leave from professional golf to be with his wife, Lisa, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. While he has made two starts since, most recently a T-65 finish at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, he has indicated that his playing schedule will largely revolve around his wife's treatment schedule and overall health.

Daniel Summerhays will take Cink's spot next week at Royal Troon. The next three alternates, in order, are now Jamie Lovemark, Colt Knost and Jon Curran.

The Open will be July 14-17 in Ayrshire, Scotland.
